Planting Leeks 5/4/2021

After starting our leek seeds in small flats, they were transplanted into one of our growing boxes in the greenhouse. This is an important step in this process and I will soon explain why. In this method the leeks need to gain as much height as possible so that the planting process will be successful. In the photo above the seedlings are about 15” in height.
The leeks are ready to be planted.

Preparation of the bed includes mounding up the soil high enough to support deep planting of about 12 inches.

This is followed by placing a layer of newspaper over the soil , thoroughly wetting it down and then covering the whole planting area with clean straw.

Two irrigation tubes were placed down the center and will be used as a guide for placement of planting holes. Holes are made using a sturdy metal rod to pierce the newspaper and produce a hole approximately 12” deep. The leek seedlings are placed into the holes while simultaneously adding water gently to “seat” the roots. Planting deep allows the growing leek to remain below ground and produce a longer white (blanched) region, as is most desirable. Here is a link to briefly illustrate the planting process. https://share.icloud.com/photos/0s2amaSHCSU48HU49p_lAVccQ

Water as needed and watch your leeks grow!!
